Statue of Mithras. Marble, 100-200 CE. Rome, Italy.

After Christianity became the state religion of the Roman Empire, pagan worship was persecuted, including the cult of the god Mithras. Today we know little about the beliefs and practices of this cult. However, many reliefs and sculptures have survived that depict Mithras.

This image was taken at the National Museum of Australia in the British Museum travelling exhibition A History of the World in 100 (and 1) Objects.
