Kodak Advertisement

Early Eastman Kodak Advertisement from 1900

Annotation

When one evaluates a newspaper or a magazine as a source of information, the question of the intended audience almost always comes up. Who was this newspaper intended for? Who actually subscribes to this magazine? One way to answer such questions is through an analysis of advertisements. Examining what a newspaper is attempting to sell can be a good indicator of who they imagine is reading that paper. Take this early advertisement from George Eastman portraying his Kodak camera, for example. Who does this ad imagine as using the camera? What is the gender of the audience? What is there age? What could this advertisement tell us about the kind of newspaper or magazine that would include it in an issue?
